Groups at MILESTONES

PRIMARY PROCESS GROUP THERAPY
The purpose of the group is to explore and problem-solve the causes that started or perpetuate the chemical dependence or co-occurring disorders. The group is designed to allow the clients to feel less alone with their symptoms, to get feedback from peers and staff, and to enhance interpersonal skills. It also helps the clients to learn specific information about their chemical dependence, co-occurring disorder and alter distorted and thinking that exacerbates the addiction.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL GROUP
This is the modality of choice for helping people with addictions and depression. The goal is to decrease symptoms and overcome the cognitive distortions and mixed messages they received in growing up in dysfunctional families. Thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are reviewed by the group therapist and discussed by others with group feedback.

STRESS REDUCTION GROUP
This is a half hour group held every night by psych tech to help clients calm down, relax and contain their thoughts and feelings for the day so as to get a good night's sleep. Techniques for stress reduction; guided imagery and relaxation techniques are addressed and utilized experientially.

COMMUNITY MEETING
Community Meeting is conducted each week by the Director. The purpose of the group is to discuss specifics of clients' treatment protocol and areas of concern about program policies and procedures.

EXPERIENTIAL/SPIRITUALITY
Through the use of experiential techniques and interpersonal discussion, clients are encouraged to examine and transform widely held personal and social belief systems about substance use and healthy recovery.

ART EXPRESSION
In art expression, the client uses clay, paint, and other art medium to create images that explore their feelings, dreams, memories or ideas. Creativity can provide a means of expression for that which has no words, or is not yet fully understood.

PSYCHODRAMA
This is an expressive group process whereby patients are asked to accept playing roles of a peer's family. People who self medicate their issues are sometimes better able to express their feelings through play-acting rather than through voice or pen and paper.

ROPES COURSE
One of the most viscerally exciting events offered at Milestones, the Ropes Challenge Course, offers clients an opportunity to overcome self-imposed limitations, discover the true meaning of the term "teamwork." Through activities such as the balance beam, in which partners climb a 25-foot pole, traverse a horizontal beam, meet in the center, and dismount together. Clients begin to learn about trust in themselves and others, and the sheer exhilaration of physical activity.

Aftercare at Milestones
MILESTONES offers’ relapse prevention education and aftercare plans that may include: consistent follow-up with treatment team-members, weekly alumni support meetings and Internet-based communications. Clients can also be transitioned to other tracts or levels of care such as: day treatment, intensive outpatient programs, sober living and individual and family therapy.

Milestones’ provides tours of sober living and transitional living programs within the surrounding area. We maintain contact with our clients to  make sure the transition to aftercare goes smoothly and that clients continue to feel connected with our alumni support program. Our belief is that involvement with solid after-care programming is the most important aspect of recovery. This is critical for successful outcomes and ongoing transformation.
